ONLINE Book Study
Being a Brain-Wise Therapist by Bonnie Badenoch
Having studied deeply and intensely with Bonnie Badenoch, PhD, LMFT, Robyn Gobbel (that's me!!) and Marshall Lyles (www.MarshallLyles.com) are honored to invite you to deep dive into her first book, Being a Brain-Wise Therapist. Bonnie’s writings are poetic and embodied while remaining grounded in relational neurosciences- a true example of the master and the emissary. Coming together as a group with weekly assigned chapters will allow us to immerse into and then integrate the core tenets of relational neurobiology as it guides our work as helpers, healers, and educators.
This highly interactive group study will require all participants to utilize their webcam and microphone, keep webcams on the entire time and microphones on mute, except when speaking to the group. Using the Zoom platform, participants will be able to see each other in a “Hollywood Squares” format. Though much is lost in an online platform, using webcams, keeping them always on, and the format of Zoom meetings will allow us to create as much long-distance resonance as possible.
Each week, you’ll come to the study group having read the assigned chapters (usually two or three chapters). Marshall and Robyn will lead a full group discussion, both between the two of us as well as with the group participants. You’ll be invited and encouraged to actively participate by unmuting your microphone, though Marshall and Robyn both understand that some people learn more through observation! Verbal participation is welcomed, not required :)
After approximately an hour of group discussion, you’ll break up into small groups in order to have a more active and engaged discussion with your peers. Marshall and Robyn will move in and out of the groups for your support, as needed. We’ll end each meeting reconnecting as a full group where we will summarize the week and look ahead to the chapters assigned for the next week.
(Please note- this book study will cover parts 1 and 2 of the book. Part 3- Children, Teens, and Families, will not be included though we HIGHLY encourage you to read those sections on your own!)

Purchasing the Book:
The cost of the book is not included in the book study fee. You are responsible for purchasing the book from your favorite book retailer and in your preferred format (paperback, ebook, etc.)
I’m not a therapist- can I still participate?
YES. Marshall and I are passionate about supporting helper, healers, and educators become more embodied, present, and resonant. If you identify in any way as a helper, healer, or educator, I hope you will join us!!
I’m a play therapist- will you talk about working with children?
Marshall and Robyn are both RPT-Ss and are highly experienced working with both children and adults. This book study is not intended to be geared toward a specific population of therapists. We will likely share our experiences having worked with children, teens, adults, and families and therefore anticipate that the book study will be applicable to all helpers, healers, and educators. Because Bonnie is focused more on a way of being and less on a way of doing, you will find that this book applies to you, regardless of your area of specialization or preferred population!
Is this book about developing new techniques as a therapist or helper?
The relational neurosciences focus on cultivating a way of being as opposed to a way of doing. This book dives deep into understanding the brain, particularly with social brain. Bonnie then goes on to describe her way of conceptualizing the inner community, a way of working with clients (and ourselves) that Marshall and I have found to be deeply healing. The second part of the book is more direct about working with clients, though you will still find an emphasize on a way of BEING not a way of doing.
What if I miss a week or have a conflict?
We are hoping you’ll attend as many sessions as possible! Regular attendance will help us navigate some of the barriers that are inherent in an online book study. However, if you find yourself unable to attend a session, we plan to record the meetings (minus the small group discussions). You’ll be able to catch up before the next group meeting.
What type of tech requirements are there?
The webinars will be hosted on Zoom- you can download Zoom here: https://zoom.us/download
and read about Zoom here: https://zoom.us/
You need high speed internet and should be able to login from your laptop, tablet, or even SmartPhone with the Zoom app.
I’ve never participated in anything like this- what kind of equipment do I need?
We HIGHLY recommend you use headphones during the meeting- even the free ear buds you got when you purchased your cell phone should work great! Your computer almost certainly has a built in webcam and microphone. Here’s how you can find out:
I'm not in eastern time- how do I make this time-zone adjustment?
I’ve changed my mind and no longer want to participate. Can I cancel?
As long as you cancel your registration before January 10, 2020 you will receive a refund minus a $25 admin fee.
